Summary: W. Paul Loane is an intriguing character to whom many labels apply: native Philadelphian, Ulsterman, Protestant, Roman Catholic, and sommelier. During the 1980s, he fervently supported Loyalist causes in Northern Ireland, formed ties with paramilitary, political, and cultural groups and became the North American Representative for the Ulster Defense Association (UDA) and the Ulster Democratic Party (UDP). By the late 1990s, however, he had become a proponent of reconciliation with the Republic of Ireland, visiting Nationalist shrines in Northern Ireland and, eventually, converting to Roman Catholicism. The collection documents many aspects of Loane’s life, from his political and cultural interests to his professional expertise in the field of wine and spirits. It consists of pamphlets, notices and publications from Ulster-related societies and organizations. There are newspaper clippings, articles written by Loane, ephemera and correspondence. In addition, there are photographs and fifteen audio tapes. Unprocessed additions to the W. Paul Loane papers (Accession 2010.006) include 0.9 linear feet (3 boxes) of materials spanning the years 1981-2010. These materials document a wide range of political, paramilitary, cultural, and religious organizations with which Mr. Loane has been associated over the past four decades, including both Ulster loyalist and Irish republican groups; organizations based on Scots-Irish, Irish, English, or British heritage; a wide range of Catholic and other Christian congregations; Farset Youth and Community Development Ltd. in Belfast; and others. There are also materials documenting Mr. Loane's work as a wine and spirits expert. Included are correspondence, ephemera, pamphlets, newspapers, photocopied articles, photographs from the Philadelphia area and from Mr. Loane's trips to Northern Ireland, DVDs, and artifacts. Most of the additional materials are in English, but there are also items in Gaelic, Welsh, and Amharic. Further unprocesed additions (not yet accessioned as of 5/3/2010) include 3.3 linear feet (4 boxes) of materials spanning ca. 1977-2005. They provide further documentation of Irish politics and a diversity of religious and cultural organizations in which Mr. Loane has taken an interest. They include photographs, correspondence, serials, newspapers, books, pamphlets, posters, an audiocassette, textiles, and other items.
