The Council’s goal was to spur improvement and maintenance of higher sanitation standards and eliminate overcrowding at the hospitals. Under the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Health, the Council was initially responsible for all city hospitals, but focused primarily on Philadelphia General Hospital, then known as Blockley Hospital. Records include correspondence, minutes, hospital shop reports, journals, bills, and receipts. There are some papers of the Social Service Auxiliary, Philadelphia General Hospital, 1945 1950.
