Summary: This folder contains former volume 1, pages 74 to 136 of the extra illustrated version of John Galt's The Life, Studies and Works of Benjamin West. It contains letters from the artist including letters relating to the Royal Academy of Arts and personal correspondences, and prints of notable contemporaries and landscapes. Most of the material dates between the 1790s and 1810s, but some is from the 1750s and 1760s. Oversize pages are in box 3, folder 1.

John Galt wrote two volumes covering the life of Benjamin West. The first was published in 1816 and contains biographical information from West’s birth to his travels in Italy in the 1760s. The second volume contains West’s move to London and his subsequent career as historical painter to King George III, and ends with West’s death in 1820.
