Summary: "A Collection of Interesting Subjects of Marine Views, Military Parade, Hunting, Coursing, Racing, etc." Manuscript title-page in a contemporary hand, and 53 etchings by Henry Alken, all finely colored by hand, neatly inlaid within decorative borders. Original edition of one of the rarest if not actually the rarest of Alken's works. One of the apparently very few known copies. Recorded copies of this work vary in the number of plates, three copies which have appeared in America and England having contained variously fifty-six and fifty-three plates. In all probability different issues of the publication were issued with a different number of plates. With a few exceptions, the plates in this copy all have captions. A note in Volume V of 'book-auction records,' referring to a copy of this work, reads in part as follows: '. . .so few copies were issued that it was not considered worthwhile by the publishers to have a title page printed.' This explains the presence of the manuscript title page. Although hunting, coursing, and racing are among the subjects mentioned on the title page, the plates are all of military subjects. Other copies of this work, in fact, have appeared with the title page reading: 'Military Duties, Occurences, etc., etc.,' also in manuscript."
